Salem is the fifth largest city in Tamil Nadu by population The city is surrounded by hills: Nagaramalai on the north, Jarugumalai on the south, Kanjamalai on the west, Godumalai on the east and the Shevaroy Hills on the northeast. The Thirumanimutharu River flows through the city, dividing it in two. A major textile centre, also known for its trademark SAIL steel plant, its Sago factories, magnesite ores and its famous mango belt. Salem has a significantly higher sex ratio and Literacy rate compared to the national average. Its health indices are one among the best in the country – thanks to the untiring work of our government officials and every dedicated medical professional in the district. The Obstetric and Gynecological Society of Salem was started in 1989 and has been consistenly growing till date delivering scientific substrate to its members, bringing out leaders from within , positively impacting the health of the society around and has earned a lot of reputation from outside for its enthusiasm, quality, equality and unity.
The Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of India (FOGSI) is the professional organization representing practitioners of obstetrics and gynaecology in India. With 241 member societies and over 33,000 individual members spread over the length and breadth of the country, FOGSI is probably one of the largest membership based organizations of specialized professionals. FOGSI came into formal existence in Madras on January 6,1950 at the sixth All India Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, FOGSI exists to encourage and disseminate knowledge, education and research in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, to pilot and promote preventive and therapeutic services related to the practice of Obstetrics and Gynaecology for betterment of the health of women and children in particular. It also to advocate the cause of reproductive health and rights and to support and protect the interest of practitioners of obstetrics and gynaecology in India. The Federation also collaborates with and partners the Government of India and is an invited reprehensive on all relevant policy making bodies of the government on issues related to women’s health. FOGSI has close links and affiliation with international and regional organizations like FIGO, AOFOG and SAFOG, with many of its members having occupied prestigious positions in these organizations from time to time. The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of India is the official publication of FOGSI and is published bimonthly and circulated to every individual member. It contains articles and contributions on fundamental research and clinical practice as also case reports of clinical interest. With www.fogsi.org the official website, FOGSI has an important presence in cyberspace which works to promote and fulfil the aims and objectives of the Federation. The Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is the academic wing of FOGSI with over 1010 fellows. It was established by FOGSI on December 21, 1984 to further promote the education, training, research and knowledge in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive health.

Who We Are
The Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Salem was started in 1989 by the visionary effort of Dr.P.Chellammal and by strong motivation Dr.K.Arthanari. OGSOS Council was formed by Founder President Dr.A.R.Saraswathy Founder Secretary Dr.Chellammal, Treasurer Dr.Chithra Sampath, Vice President Dr.N.S.Mahalakshmi, and Joint Secretary Dr.P.Radhamani with 10 exclusive committee members.
